Piñang Hinirang
12" x 16" | Giclée Print | Limited Edition of 30
Piñang Hinirang (Beloved Piña) is a visual homage to the Philippine motherland, rendered through the delicate language of piña and calado embroidery-inspired illustration. At the center, a faceless maternal figure cradles a child, an embodiment of the nation as both nurturer and protector.
She is adorned in traditional Filipino attire, with butterfly sleeves and embroidered textures that echo garments such as the terno, historically crafted from piña fabric. While the pineapple was first introduced to the Philippines through colonial trade, Filipinos cultivated its fibers and transformed them into something uniquely their own, elevating piña into a luxurious textile that would become a hallmark of Filipino elegance, identity.
Radiating behind the figure are the sun rays of the Philippine flag, symbolizing freedom, resilience, and hope. Framing her head are three stars, representing Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao—the archipelago’s three major island groups. Around the composition, 82 smaller embroidered stars signify the provinces of the Philippines. These are connected by sweeping topographical lines, evoking both landforms and the unseen ties of history and kinship.
Piñang Hinirang invites reflection on how a nation is held together, not only by its geography or symbols, but by the enduring creativity, resilience, and love of its people.
