Punla’t Piña (Seed and Pineapple) is a tribute to the farmers whose hands have sown the seeds, the punla, of both sustenance and identity. At the center of this digital illustration stands a symbolic figure, crowned with a flame that rises above her—an emblem of the passion, sacrifice, and devotion poured into cultivating the land.
Cradled in her arms is the pineapple, a fruit that represents more than nourishment. Nurtured for its fruit and fiber, it has grown into a symbol of Filipino ingenuity, hospitality, and pride, deeply rooted in the agricultural practices that shaped the nation’s history.
At the foot of the central figure are vignettes of farming life, including planting, harvesting, and tending to the land. Each act reflects the intimate relationship between the Filipino people and their environment. The background’s repeated arrow motifs echo growth and movement, while the heart-stitched frame speaks to the love embedded in every labor of the land.
Rendered in the style of piña and calado embroidery, this piece honors how cultural identity is inseparable from the soil, formed by the rhythms of cultivation, the cycles of care, and the quiet strength of those who work the fields.
Punla’t Piña is a visual offering to the hands that plant, tend, and transform, forging identity not only from what grows, but from how we grow it.
